Smith’s writing is frequently inspired by her own nightmares, and the nightmares of her friends. Smith wrote brand new material in the form of a new The Vampire Diaries trilogy (2009-2010). Several of her books were recovered and rereleased, including The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle and Night World series, as well as her novels The Night of the Solstice and Heart of Valor. Smith worked as a special education teacher for three years before becoming a full-time writer. Smith also acquired a Masters degree in Education at the University of San Francisco. Smith double-majored in English and Physiological Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Smith wrote her first book, The Night of the Solstice (1987), while she was still in high school and completed editing the novel in university. Smith’s interest in writing began in kindergarten, when her teacher praised a poem she had written.
